How it works

A transparent look at what happens when you create an invoice.

1. Your data stays in your browser

The editor, calculations and PDF generation all run on your device. Nothing is sent to a server. Drafts are only stored if you click Save draft, and then only in this browser.

2. Line calculations

  • Gross = quantity × unit price
  • Discount = gross × % (or a fixed ₹ amount, never more than gross)
  • Taxable value = gross − discount

3. Choosing the tax

If the seller's state equals the place of supply, the tool applies CGST + SGST (each half the rate). If they differ, it applies IGST at the full rate. Never both. If either state is missing, no tax is applied and you're asked to fix it — the tool never guesses. You can override the treatment manually for special cases.

4. Rounding

All money is handled in whole paise. Tax is rounded per line to the nearest paisa. Optionally, the grand total is rounded to the nearest rupee and the difference is shown as Round off. The preview and PDF use the exact same numbers.

5. Download

The PDF is an A4 document with real, selectable text, repeated table headers on each page and page numbers.

GST invoice guide

A plain-language overview of what typically goes on a GST tax invoice in India. Not legal advice.

Tax invoice vs bill of supply vs proforma

  • Tax invoice — issued by a GST-registered supplier for taxable supplies; shows GST charged.
  • Bill of supply — used for exempt supplies, by composition taxpayers, or where GST is not charged.
  • Proforma invoice — a quotation-style document. It is not a tax invoice and does not create a tax liability.

Details commonly required on a tax invoice

  • Supplier name, address and GSTIN
  • A consecutive serial number, unique for the financial year (up to 16 characters)
  • Date of issue
  • Recipient name and address, and GSTIN/UIN if registered
  • Place of supply with state name and code (for inter-state supplies)
  • HSN code for goods or SAC for services, as applicable to your turnover
  • Description, quantity and unit, total value and taxable value
  • Rate and amount of CGST, SGST/UTGST or IGST
  • Whether tax is payable on reverse charge
  • Signature or digital signature of the supplier or authorised representative

Exact requirements depend on your turnover, the type of supply and current rules — not every field applies to every invoice.

CGST + SGST or IGST?

As a general rule, an intra-state supply (supplier location and place of supply in the same state/UT) attracts CGST and SGST/UTGST, while an inter-state supply attracts IGST. Exports, SEZ supplies and several services have special place-of-supply rules.

GSTIN structure

A GSTIN has 15 characters: a 2-digit state code, the 10-character PAN, an entity number, the letter Z and a check character. A correct format does not prove the GSTIN is active — check the official GST portal.

E-invoicing

Businesses above the notified turnover threshold must register invoices on the Invoice Registration Portal to obtain an IRN and QR code. This tool does not do that.

GST invoice FAQ

Privacy policy

What we process

Invoice details you type are processed entirely in your browser to calculate totals and build the PDF. They are not transmitted to our servers, and are never placed in URLs.

Temporary state vs saved drafts

  • Working invoice — held in memory for the open tab only. Closing or refreshing the tab clears it.
  • Saved drafts — only when you click Save draft, stored in this browser's local storage. Logos and signatures are not saved. Clearing browser data deletes drafts; they do not sync between devices.

You can delete any draft, or clear all locally saved data, from the Drafts window in the editor.

Analytics and third parties

Invoice contents are never sent to analytics or advertising providers. Web fonts are loaded from Google Fonts, which receives standard request information (such as your IP address) but not your invoice data.
